Little Peakish Cafe, Wellington

One of the girls at work recommended this cafe, Little Peakish Cafe, across from work in Dukes Arcade. Their crispy chicken panini is delish but perhaps a little greasy for everyday! However I think their sweet treats and coffee are the real winners

La Bella Italia, Petone, Wellington

Lydia and I went for dinner at La Bella Italia in Petone after work last friday. We enjoy some delish food! The highlights being the clam lingunie made with fruity olive oil and the rabbit rissoto.

We also had some yummy nibbly bits to start as well as the desserts pictured, which were a chocolate torte (which was like a bleeding heart) and a hazel nut meringue with a light custard.

Lydia and I really enjoyed it. We were served my the very charismatic owner a flamboyant Italian gentleman.

And we did a spot of shopping, as the restaurant is situated in a Italian food warehouse. I brought home some fabulous dried pasta. The food warehouse is open during the week for lunch and I believe only open on thursdays, fridays and saturdays for dinner (it was packed so it pays to book). The website is listed below:

Capitol, Wellington

Yesterday Lucinda and I enjoyed an early Sunday brunch at 9.30am at Capitol (this is when Capitol opens on a Sunday). We were their first customers!

I had a delish french toast with salmon, cream fraish and capers and Lucinda baked eggs with white beans and chorizo. We both finished with a second strong coffee and a Florentine.

A perfect early Sunday morning!

I have been to Capitol often for brunch and dinner. I believe that it defiantly boosts the best brunch and perhaps the best casual dinner in Wellington.

The photo is not my friend and won't post the correct way up!

Martha's Pantry, Wellington; Lemon Curd Cupcakes

I had heard of the beautiful cupcakes and the divine high teas, so my mother and I decide it was necessary to indulge on a particularly cold and windy overcast Wellington day.

We managed to score a table in the packed wee cafe, sitting down while the evacuees, a mother and three or four year old little girl, were only metres away.  The staff were very friendly and told us while clearing the table, that a cupcake had been in order for the previous little girl due to a particularly nasty doctors visit. I thought how delightful this place would be as a child, however looking around the majority of the clientele were alot older.

After ordering a cup of tea, chocolate milkshake, mini cupcake, lemon curd cupcake and lemon meringue pie between us, we sat down to our grown-up tea party (or feast) to taste, nibble and sip, before a verdict could be reached.

I will admit that while the cupcakes were in pretty little cases they were particularly dry. A disappointment similar to that found at the "Cupcake Parlor" in Christchurch. Perhaps they were stale. Despite this they did look the part and were decadently decorated with layers of icing. I thought the lemon curd cupcake's stale interior was disguised, a little, by the large dollop of delicious lemon curd in the middle. This, I thought, was a very nice idea indeed.

The real winners of the day was the chocolate milkshake and lemon meringue pie. The pie looked homemade with a rustic feel. The pastry was thin, crisp and sweet, which was pair perfectly with a tangy lemon curd and a velvety meringue which floated on top. The shake sprinkled with real chocolate and full of creamy ice-creamy goodness. Even two men in orange vests, who I assume were contractors, were sitting at the corner table (possibly on lunch break) slurping one each. The shake was definitely an afternoon tea by itself. It was huge!

In conclusion I would recommend this cute wee little place, however perhaps not for the cupcakes.

I was inspired by the lemon curd cupcakes, therefore went home and made myself some nice moist ones (one is shown below). I will share the recipe in my next post.

Matterhorn, Wellington: Vanilla and Black Pepper Ice-cream

I went to Matterhorn in Wellington the other night and had a lovely pineapple souffle with vanilla and black pepper ice-cream. The pepper gave the sweet vanilla a nice spicy kick and I wanted to create something easy and similar.

As i couldn't be bothered with all the stirring or setting up the ice-cream machine I opted for a vanilla and black pepper creme brulee ice-cream. I used the creme brulee recipe, which I have posted on here in an earlier post, leaving out the toffee (sugar and water mixture) and raspberries and adding 3 teaspoons of freshly cracked black pepper. I then froze the mixtures after allowing them to cool in the fridge first (after cooking).

The result was surprisingly refreshing (I didn't bother to brulee the top, I just ran a knife around the container and turned it out onto a small plate!) serving it with a biscuit base, brandy snap and chopped up moro bar.
